Programs
A World Fit For Kids! (WFIT) provides daily afterschool programs at 11 Title I schools (where 84% of students come from economically disadvantaged homes) in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
WFIT programs combine purposeful physical activity with proven youth development principles and include nutrition education, homework help, mentoring and select enrichment activities. In addition to reducing obesity, increasing graduation rates, and enhancing work readiness, these programs promote physical, mental and emotional wellness. Our matriculating K-12 model features age-appropriate programs that promote health by establishing physical activity as a routine and fun aspect of life. Students can enter and benefit from our programs at any time in their development, but when possible, our goal is to establish contact at the elementary school level and maintain a relationship through high school graduation. The students we serve become advocates and role models who change their communities from the inside out. By adopting healthy habits and sharing what they have learned, they positively influence their peers, families, neighborhoods and schools.

Studies have shown that physical activity is crucial for optimal brain function and the ability to improve learning, concentration and memory. According to a 2010 literature review done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than half of 50 studies reviewed showed a positive association between school-based physical activity -- such as physical education, recess and extracurricular sports -- and academic performance. Similarly, a study released by the Physical Education Research For Kids found that "Physical activity is critical for optimal brain function and the ability to learn. Physical activity improves the executive functions, the ability to concentrate, memory, and intellectual performance." This important link between physical activity and academic achievement should not be overlooked and is being implemented daily at all 11 school sites as part of WFIT's afterschool programming and training.
