Overview:Mentors in MotionSM training enables participants to gain new insights and perspectives about planning and facilitating quality physical activity sessions while integrating opportunities for youth development, leadership and experiential learning
Primary goal: Successful facilitation of quality physical activities
Objectives:

Program Description: Innovative personal development & positive activity facilitation training
Programs Specifics: 6.5 hr workshop with discussion & activities - one full day or 2 half days

Teen Success Training Program (TSTP) High School After School Program
Mission: Preparing Young People for Fit and Fulfilling Lives
Primary Goal: Teen Success

Program Overview:
The Teen Success Training Program (TSTP) is an exemplary high school after school program developed in inner-city Los Angeles. Teens gain marketable skills and valuable work experience. They experience a new world: one of possibilities and newly discovered talents. They gain confidence and skills to make realistic plans and achieve them.
TSTP empowers teens to become successful high school graduates and positive contributors to the local community by involving them in self-building activities and experiential learning.
Objectives:
- Enhance the emotional, mental and physical fitness of teens
- Train youth leaders to be mentors and positive role models for peers and younger youth
- Provide life skills for students’ successful integration into school, workplace and community
Phase 1 Training Components (Four 7.5 hour workshops)
- Module 1: Personal Empowerment
Tapping into the power of who we are and opening to greater possibilities
Setting overall goals for success; building trust in self and others; identifying personal gifts and qualities of leadership; learning to skills to cooperate; practice clear & authentic communication
- Module 2: Learning to Lead
Positive coaching with ourselves & others
Differentiation between friendship and mentorship; effective communication with peers, coworkers, and students; perceptions, projections and limiting views; empowerment to choose own responses & reactions
First steps to get into a working environment
Becoming outcome oriented; work safety protocols & procedures; homework assistance; work ethics; laws pertaining to teen employment; beginning of portfolio building
- Module 4: Mentors in Motion™ (physical activity leadership training)
Confidence & competency in conducting physical activities and leadership skills for life
Success strategies; facilitating safe, meaningful, fun activities; proper stretching & hydration; effective communication; positive role modeling and mentoring
Students completing all training and 24 hours of community service receive
5 academic and 2 community service credits (With principal’s approval)
Recommended additional components for teen success:
- First Aid/ CPR training and certification
- CAHSEE Preparation assistance
Phase 2 - Advanced TSTP Training:
Reaching new heights of personal health and well-being
Students interested in advancing their opportunities for working with an elementary after school program or youth-serving agency are encouraged to enroll in the advanced training:
Acquiring the skills and confidence required to work effectively in variety of settings; resume writing; interviewing skills; Dress for Success; business communications; how to keep a job, and phone etiquette
- Personal Fitness / Nutrition - Assessment and Plan
Fitnessgram self-assessment; skills & knowledge needed for testing others; tracking physical activity & nutritional intake; designing a personal plan to improve over-all health
Additional AWFFK! Workshops for After School Agencies
- Effectively Integrating Teens into Elementary After School Programs and other Work Environments (3 hours)
Agencies working with trained teens have the opportunity to improve the quality of the experience for everyone involved. Staff will learn about the skills and knowledge the teens have acquired so that their expertise can be utilized to maximum potential. The importance of requiring a minimum grade point average for employment is also addressed to ensure the teen’s long term success.
- Implementing the TSTP Model - for High School Program Directors (Two 7 hour workshops)
High School program directors learn about the nuts and bolts of successfully implementing the TSTP model. Part 1 covers grant compliance, administrative and financial aspects; part 2 covers staffing, program set-up and maintenance and reporting.
