A World Fit For Kids! > Award Winning Programs

A World Fit For Kids! (WFIT) provides daily programs in school and afterschool at Title I schools (where 84% of students come from economically disadvantaged homes) in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

WFIT’s K-12 programs combine vital physical activity with proven youth development principles and include nutrition education, academic support, mentoring and select enrichment activities. In addition to reducing obesity, increasing graduation rates, and enhancing work readiness, these programs promote physical, mental and emotional wellness by establishing physical activity as a routine and fun aspect of life. Students can enter our programs at any time in their development. But when possible, our goal is to establish contact at the elementary school level and maintain a relationship through high school graduation. By adopting healthy habits early and sharing what they have learned, our kids positively influence their peers, families, neighborhoods and schools. The students we serve become advocates and role models who change their communities from the inside out.

Our CEO was recently honored with the President’s Councilon Physical Fitness Award for Community Engagement.

Studies have shown that physical activity is crucial for optimal brain function and improve learning, concentration and memory. According to a 2010 literature review done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than half of 50 studies reviewed showed a positive association between school-based physical activity -- such as physical education, recess and extracurricular sports -- and academic performance. Similarly, a study released by the Physical Education Research For Kids found that "Physical activity is critical for optimal brain function and the ability to learn. Physical activity improves the executive functions, the ability to concentrate, memory, and intellectual performance." This important link between physical activity and academic achievement is being implemented daily at all 14 WFIT school sites as part of our afterschool programming and training.

Our Healthy Behaviors Learning Centers

California’s Healthy Behaviors Initiative addresses serious health problems facing students in low-income communities throughout California and most at risk of obesity. Through its work, Healthy Behaviors is demonstrating the important role that afterschool programs can play in addressing the childhood obesity epidemic in the United States. The Initiative was launched in 2004 by the Center for Collaborative Solutions (CCS) in partnership with the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) Network for a Healthy California (now the Nutrition Education Obesity Prevention Branch) in response to alarming childhood obesity rates–and the associated health, financial and societal impacts–and to take advantage of the unprecedented opportunity to reach children through afterschool programs.
Certification as California’s Healthy Behaviors Learning Centers
Recognized by the Initiative and its partners as a driving force in improving children’s eating habits and fitness levels and provide a key to reversing the devastating childhood obesity trend, we continue to develop additional resources and tools for afterschool programs that want to improve their nutrition, physical activity, and food security practices partner with regional and state organizations to promote state and federal policies to strengthen the role of afterschool programs in addressing the childhood obesity crisis.

WFIT was one of the first programs in the state to be recognized for developing exemplary practices that support and encourage healthy behaviors and have a measurable impact on the health and well-being of low-income families throughout California, and is prominently featured in A Step-by-Step Guide to Developing Exemplary Practices in Nutrition, Physical Activity and Food Security in Afterschool Programs.
